Pick the band by the size of the party

Small dinner or home party. An acoustic duo or trio: voice and guitar, or sax and piano. It needs little space, and for under 60 guests one small speaker is enough.

Garden, villa or rooftop party. A 4 or 5 piece band with vocals, keys, guitar, bass and drums. It needs a flat area, power and a small sound system.

Big birthday or engagement. A full band with brass, or a band that plays together with a DJ, for a long night of dancing.

Music that suits your guests

Party bands play pop and rock covers, soul and funk, Arabic pop, Bollywood and Latin. Songs can be in English, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish and French. Send your favourite songs and the ones you want for special moments, such as the cake or a surprise entrance. A song the band does not already play needs a few weeks to rehearse.

Plan the night

Timing. A band usually plays two or three sets with breaks. Put the liveliest set after dinner, when people are ready to dance.
Neighbours and volume. At villas, compounds and beach clubs, check the volume rules and the time the music has to stop.
Power and shade. Outdoor bands need power near the stage. In the warmer months, plan the outdoor part after sunset.
Yachts. Space on deck is small, so a duo or trio fits best.
